Rear brakes issue

1989 F250 7.3 IDI
After driving the truck for a while the brake pedal gets really hard and the rear brakes are dragging. Dragging so much I can sit stopped at idle and the truck will not move. By the time I reached home the both rear brakes were smoking and smelled terrible. I let the truck sit and cool off and the brakes are normal until several miles of driving again. Is this an ABS sensor, proportional valve issue. I am not sure where to start. Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jeff

Were the rear brakes worked on recently? The auto-adjusters could have been installed backwards, maybe? The drum brakes on a Sterling axle are super easy to deal with. Just remove the wheel and pull of the drum to check for obvious issues. If your master cylinder is ancient there could be a failure there. There should be one rubber brake hose that feeds the rear metal lines--maybe a problem there? When you bleed the rear lines do you get normal fluid flow? Personally I always recommend replacing any suspect brake system components because they are cheap and easy. I recently replaced all rubber hoses, front calipers, pads, rear shoes and hardware, and MC for under $300 which is cheap peace of mind in my opinion.

if the brakes release after sitting a while, i would seriously suspect a collapsing rubber brake flex line from frame to axle as the culprit.

The brake have not been worked on recently. I recall hearing that the rubber lines as they degrade can act as a check valve. The flexibly line seems a cheap place to start. I have never replaced it and I have had the truck for 10+ years. Thanks for reminding me of the flexible line to the rear end.

i have replaced the rubber line twice on my 88 over the past 496,000 miles. and it will be replaced again before it goes back on the road after the cab swap.

Also check your E brake cable. They can stick causing the brakes to drag. Hard pedal may be due to a vacuum pump failure.

Was going to post that this would be my first suspect too.

Rear Brake issue solved

Replaced the flexible line to the rear end and bled the brakes. I finally got to do a real test. I drove it about 100 miles and the sticking issue is solved. The brake pedal is better than ever. I appreciate the replies and suggestions. This site is so helpful and you guys are great.
Thanks again.
