Yes it does work if they know what they are doing. There are a few YouTube videos on it. One is a Super Duty and they just take the hood off to a support device under special lights to work on it. Other area they access through existing holes and by removing panels.
Before getting my truck I talked to my son’s father in law who does PDR for a living and is very good at it. He said it is more complex to do than steel but the talented guys can do it. He also said it’s a lot more labor intensive and will overcome the cost of new panels if the damage is bad.
I also have a guy from work that twice now was able to find replacements in his color at the boneyard

My insurance company just sent me a list of body shops. I’ll also talk to the local dealer on Monday to see if they’re bringing in somebody, since there’s going to be several many that need repair, after yesterday’s storms.
It's all about the person doing it and his/her training. Having lived in the front-range of Colorado we received a lot of hail and we had a great dent guy. Repaired both steel and aluminum hoods we had damaged perfectly. Hail damage in AZ? Guy didn't have a clue how to repair it, it was "too much" for him to deal with. Good luck finding that right person.
