Headlight switch: 8-pin & extra wire

I have replaced the headlight switch on my '78 F150, which is an 8-pin switch, in the course of trying to remedy related electrical issues that include a fuse that keeps blowing for the passenger courtesy light at the top/back of the cab. Handing it over to my mechanic, he noticed a black & orange wire that he said "was dangling, so I plugged it right into the new switch." Wait...where? There is no hole for this wire on the 8-pin switch. I looked up what the 9-pin switch looked like and the pins are definitely in a different location than my 8-pin one. Since the new switch did not solve the blown fuse problem, I removed the first new switch per mechanic's recommendation (he blamed a bad switch from O'Reiley's) to prepare for installing another new switch, so I got to see this mystery wire and take the photo, below. You can see the spade terminal of the mystery wire on the right.

1.) Where does this wire go and what is it for?
2.) Does anyone know about the "courtesy lights" that are supposed to light up under the dash area when you open the door? My F150 is a Lariat and it seems that this trim level would have this feature, though I don't know.

Thanks.

Headlight switch, cargo light & courtesy light diagrams

Hey, I can actually understand the bottom two sketches. Might explain why the cargo light also went out when the courtesy light wasn't working. Thanks.
