6.0 Leaker issue, Please help.

Hello all,
spend the last 3 months freezing my backside off trying to figure out why my Ex won’t fire up. It started with cooked wires to the IPR, replaced the wires, new IPR, new ICP, air tested HPOS(compressor only good for 120psi, held 80psi overnight). Put it back together and it tries to start, takes a bit to show low pressure oil on idiot gauge(15-20 seconds crank to build oil pressure for ficm to fire injectors). Cracked loose the engine fuel filter cap and it seemed to have pressure when loosened, and it was over half full. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Do you have the factory oil filter & cap, or is it an aftermarket? 15-20 seconds to build base oil pressure seems excessive. Any codes? 6.0 is also notorious for not liking aftermarket sensors.

Yes I do, I also have an unused wix cap and filter I picked up the other day just to try it out. I’ve scanned for codes and not seen anything yet. All parts and sensors have been motorcraft from the local dealer(father is retired FMC guy)

How about the rest? If this started with heat-damaged wiring to the IPR, I'd inspect the harness in that area very carefully for additional damage.

Aside from checking the oil level and battery voltage, theres not alot you can do besides guess without some way of reading data from these things.
Do you have any way of reading the ICP data? Forscan, Torque, scan tool?

I would confirm ICPv cranking and check fuel pressure.
Where did you apply pressure for the air test?

Hi Byrd.dog thanks for replying,
I went over the harness pretty well with a meter. After the long crank to get oil pressure on the idiot gauge and enough on the CTS3 (IPR pressure) it tries to start, as long as it’s cranking it kinda runs until I left off the key. I read on another post about diluted oil from fuel, I’m going to change the oil and use a Wix cap and filter I had around.

Hey Kbeefy,
Thanks for the reply. I have forscan on my laptop, but I’m not real savvy on the setup to monitor PiDs. There is also an Edge CTS 3 on the dash. Oil lever is good, but could use to be changed. I picked up a Wix cap and filter, as I always change oil filters between oil changes. I have an air test kit from a friend who is a great diesel mechanic, it allows IPR test and ICP test. Both locations held 70-80 psi overnight, compressor only good for 120 psi. Just to clear it up, mine is a late build 2005 Ex, with newer Fomoco oil cooler. Thanks again for the help.

I've had a slow crank cause a hard start like that. Whats your cranking RPM? Cranking voltage?

If you can, watch ICP on the CTS. It should build up over 1000 within a few seconds of cranking.
When I had a leaking STC fitting it would take 20+ seconds to build ICP.

It takes 15-20 seconds of cranking to build pressure on idiot gauge, as soon as it shows pressure on dash gauge ICP goes up to 1100-1200 psi(on CTS) and stays there while cranking. I’m thinking STC myself as I heard a “pop” at the back of the engine once when I rolled throttle then pop since then I’ve had this issue. I used a stethoscope (for automobile use) while air testing and couldn’t hear any type of air leak

20 seconds of crank is a lot to register oil pressure on dash basically having to refill system each time

post picture top engine

how fast does oil filter house take to fill and inspect housing for broken prices at this time

A HPO problem can create a LPO problem and visa versa

scan for DTC

post values for following at KOEO and Cranking conditions
ICPV
IPR%

Slim chance on STC they usually only achieve 3-400 psi when broke anything possible I suppose

1100-1200 ICP is enough to start 500 psi is the point when PCM. Commands fuel injector to fire

post the following under crank conditions

RPM
CMP/CKP SYNC
FICM SYNC
FPW
FICM VOLT

Do you have a 2004 Engine or a 2005 engine?

The 2005 engine has an orange-yellow sticker on the passenger valve cover. The 2004 engine has a (I believe) blue sticker.

If you have the round 03-04 pump, you have a lot to check over. The same applies if you have the V4 2005 pump. You'll be surprised what you find "mechanics" do on these 2005 pumps

I’ll check next time I can get under the hood, I have a few days of work projects to get out of my way. Be back soon. I pretty sure mine is a 08/05 build date with ICP on passenger valve cover.

In that case you definitely have a 2005 engine. Mine was built probably a few days before yours and has a 2005 Engine.

Buy yourself a STC fitting kit from a Ford Dealer. If your EGR cooler is still present, you'll need an EGR install kit too to make sure you don't have any leaks.

I'd go with a new Motorcraft oil filter & cap. Looks like you've got the taller aftermarket one on there now, which would be consistent with Wix. If you use an aftermarket cap with an OEM filter it can cause oil supply issues...
