While driving i felt and heard something happen to left front wheel. Eased home and now the brake drum won't come off. I've tried beating, banging, heat, loads of penetrative oil and prying and no luck. The drum is seized to the studs meaning the drum isn't loose around the studs. The wheel turns freely. I don't think any puller will be successful. I have a disc brake kit on the way so I'm not worried about getting aggressive with it. My cutting torch is at another location so I'm thinking about going at it with a cut off wheel. Anyone ever tried this? Really need some advice here. Thank you!
I'm confused, but if you don't care about the drum, they are cast iron. So, a torch won't cut it, the wiz wheel would work, but a big hammer would break it in pieces faster and easier IMHO
This is a situation where a shop manual would be very helpful. The brake drums are pressed on to the hub. You have to remove the drum hub and all. the hubs are becoming unobtainum so don't damage it. To replace the drum, you have to press out the studs then install a new drum and press in new studs. Even if you are going to disc keep those hubs someone will need them.
All you need to do is remove the dust cap in the center of the hub, remove the big nut that holds the whole mess on, and pull. The hub and drum will come off as an assembly. It may be easier to do if you go behind the backing plate and back off the shoe adjuster wheel.
