Good Morning, Is there a way/resource available for me to ID the year of the 352 FE V8 transplant in the '66 F100 I just acquired? I want to begin replacing parts and not sure of fitment specs? Thanks .
The casting number and date code should be on the block, passenger side I believe. You will find what you need in these tech articles. Keep in mind that all the blocks say 352 on the front driver's side of the block the only way to tell what you actually have is to measure the stroke. Technical Articles Index - FORDification.com
Sure. Look for the date code near the oil filter adapter. It will look like a screwed on tag with a number-letter code cast into the block. You can cross reference that by finding the engineering casting code prefix, which may look like C4AE on the side of the block. Between these two, you can narrow down date the block was cast. Engine assembly and installation into a vehicle was typically done within 30 days or so.
left block between plugs 2+3 full frontal.
So far I've found C8AE-H. According to EngineLabs.com:C8AE-H – 1968, 427 FE medium-block, cross-bolted mains, side-oiler (Not believing everything I'm reading) but gathering and sharing... also 30/352 stamped right front under A/C (But seems it's on most FEs?)
The C8AE-H heads were extremely common. Click on this link and scroll to post #5 and read more than you ever wanted to know about FE heads. https://www.fordfe.com/c8ae-h-heads-t2579.html
The 30 352 is present on most all FE blocks from the early 60's to the early 70's. You'll need to find the casting markers I noted above to know what you have, Your heads are later than the 352 availability. By 68 (when that series of heads was introduced, but was used much later), the 352 had been discontinued. Which begs the question, what leads you to believe your engine is a 352 and not something else?
'52 Merc, Thanks for the link -Interesting! The previous owners stated that a 352 was installed about 10yrs ago. He didn't know the source vehicle model/year. I also found on Fordification a physical reference and those are the only sources I have. So assumptions abound... What would be a next step in figuring this motor? I'm a total Ford engine noobie and want the correct numbers when replacing even simple parts. TY.
First FE's are like Legos just about anything will swap from one to the other. Other than a few high-performance versions the heads are the same. You need the casting numbers and date code to pin down when it was produced. Then get a small wood dowel. Remove #1 and #6 spark plug. Bring #1 cylinder to top center. Stick that dowel in #1 and mark it, then stick it in #6 and mark it. Measure the stroke. 3.5-inch 352/360, 3.78-inch 390, 3.98-inch, 410/428.
Need to add. I think wasn't thinking well at the time I don't believe #6 will be at bottom center. Just measure #1 then rotate 180 degrees and measure #1 again. I hate leaving something up that may be wrong.
FYI- I managed to do the dowel test in cylinder #1. It measured out to a 3.5" stroke ( Did it a few time to be sure!) So accordingly it's a 352 or 360 cu in. At least it's narrowed down so I can make educated choices on parts! Thanks All for the input! I'll have another round of questions soon!!
