You're nearly there. Yes, your experience is frustrating, but there is nothing wrong with an up to snuff 6V system. A well maintained 6V system is just as good as a well maintained 12V system. I feel that those who boast "performance improvements" with their new 12V systems with new battery, charging apparatuses, new wires etc are comparing to a rundown 6V system with components that haven't been reviewed in 70+ years. The 6V system would have the same improvements if all the same items were refreshed (and probably for a little less $$$ too)... You already have done your regulator and are well on your way with the generator.
Good points! One of the thoughts with 12 volt is that I bought a 292 and plan at some point to replace my 239 with that since my 239 is struggling.
But I can keep the 292 6 volt, for some reason I just assumed I would move to 12 volt with the 292. Now, recall I'm a devout member of the procrastinators club, so it might be a while before that move happens. I've had the 292 for only a year and it is currently in pieces.
