Engine Won’t Turn Over

I have an older 302 with a Carburetor and about 50% of the time the engine bogs down and turns over very slowly when you try and start it, other times the starter spins the engine easily and it starts right up. The starter is a 3 month old OReilly Ultima Starter, new, not remanufactured, the battery,an Odyssey, is hot, 13.2, the timing is right, double checked, highest vacuum, check by OReilly says starter is good, but about 1/2 of the time the engine will bog down and hardly turn over when trying to start it…Bad Electrical Connection?

Thanks

Probably bad electrical connection. Clean grounds and positive wire, make sure they aren't frayed anywhere.
I had a positive wire that was grounding out on the exhaust.

The battery is hot, like temperature hot?
Feel the wires are they hot?

Does it do this cold or hot or both?

Timing set correctly? back it off a couple degrees see if it makes a difference.

I am not sure, but I think that is the test OReilly did with the starter still on the truck and they hooked up to the battery. Supposed to be a pretty accurate test, better then a bench test, and it showed the starter was good. I thought for sure it was the starter.

Edit: When I Google it, it calls for a “ Carbon Pile Tester” which I don’t know what it is and don’t have one.

Thanks

That is my biggest question, can an electrical short or bad connection be off and on causing the problem sometimes but not all the time.

I meant the battery was charged, 13.2 volts, checked with a fluke, no load test.

It has done it both ways, but mostly when it is cold. But the last four starts it did not do it, the starter spun the motor very stongly.

Checked the timing twice using vacuum gauge, setting timing to highest vacuum. Backed it off a little, it did it again.

Thanks

Yes, if the positive battery cable is loose, close to exhaust, the sheathing can melt and expose the wires.
If those exposed wires touch metal/ground you will experience what is happening.
It can be intermittent, if you watch the wires/engine when you go to start it, it torques over/moves, and can contact an exposed starter power wire.

I'm assuming all connections are clean, I'd check again.
Also, make sure you have the negative grounded correctly to the engine block.
Make sure all connections are clean.

Take a picture of your battery and solenoid if possible. Connections could be clean, what condition are the actual neg/pos wires?

Load test is easy, connect the volt meter to the battery, crank it over, how many volts does it drop to while cranking?
Should not go below 9-9.5v If it does, you have a serious short, or your battery is bad.

Well, right now instead of guessing, I have to get in there and inspect all of the starter wires and connections so we have more information. Everything is pointing away from the Starter and as you say an exposed wire can cause intermittent problems and that is my biggest point. I have to get in there and take a look.

Everything was put up clean and tight and coated with Dialectic Grease but I will check the connections and the wires to see what I can find out.

Thanks

Will have to try the load test, might be interesting.

Checked all of the Starter wiring and connections and everything looks good. So the Starter checks out good, the wiring checks out good then someone told me a malfunctioning Solenoid ( this one mounted on the sidewall) can do the exact same thing. Read up on it and it describes exactly what is happening. Going to get a “Standard” Solenoid from OReillys and change it out. This is the fourty Solenoid in two years. Didn’t know a Solenoid could do this, I thought they were just open or closed.

Thanks

I had troubles with this last time I had to replace the solenoid on my 77 Comet. The new ones are junk. Try to find an old style, all metal solenoid. That's what I did and it's been on the job for several years now. Car sits for long periods of time between starts. Clean the ground wire terminal where it's bolted to the engine block. Do not put grease on it there.
