My 1996 Ford F150 has the brake warning light and Antilock brake light on. The brake fluid reservoir is full and the brake pedal is not depressed and fully released. The truck will not start due to these warning lights, but will run and drive just fine. Is this just a simple brake replacement or is the issue deeper? Will pull codes soon…
Ummm... Your brake and abs light can't prevent your truck from starting. There's no connection between the brake light and your abs light to the ECU. Have you tried disconnecting the brake reservoir float sensor to see if the lights extinguish? Historically, a brake light and an abs light is a sign that you have low brake fluid.
EDIT-Thats an OBD2 truck, which I know much less about. I would still be surprised if the brakes light or abs light talks to the ECU in any way.
The red brake light will turn on the ABS light. As already mentioned, neither light will keep the engine from starting and running. How does the truck “run and drive just fine” when the engine “will not start?” Waiting for ABS and engine codes ……
I disconnected the reservoir sensor, no change. Could this maybe be a fuse? Or could it be a miss wire? This truck is pre owned so it wouldn’t surprise me.
"The truck will not start due to these warning lights, but will run and drive just fine."
Suggestions from my loose interpretation of this statement...
These lights will come on when you turn the key to On or Start. If the truck won't start, it's not because of these lights or the brake system. But, what can prevent it starting, even with these lights on, is the shifter not being in Park or Neutral. Assuming you get no response at all, it could be your MLPS is shot or the shift cable is out of adjustment.
Once the truck starts all warning lights should go out. If they are still on, then you have a problem in that system, or the parking brake is engaged as has already been suggested. But, this won't keep your ABS light on. If both of these are on after the engine is running, check for ABS codes. The control module, IIRC, is behind the glove box. I don't have the instructions for doing that. Hopefully you can find them somewhere. You might reseat the electrical connectors on the ABS hydraulic unit located on the frame below the accelerator pedal also.
Other than that, you'll need to provide more specific details.
