I have the factory remote oil filter mount (moves it under the front bumper) in my truck, and I noticed the hoses have begun to leak. They run from the block (oil filter adapter) to the remote filter mount, and use a standard 5/8" hose with crimped ends. The ends have flanges that bolt up to filter mount. The leak is from the point where the crimps are. I can get the new hose assembly from the dealer (ughhhh...) for like $90, and do it myself, but I wanted to post this to the group for any insight first............ Anyone ???
P.S. The damn assembly is a Ford part only...They are standard hydraulic-style hose assemblies, but the ends are Ford.....
I'd replace the entire remote unit with an aftermarket setup. You gotta take the hoses out anyway, so all that leaves is the piece that screws onto the engine in place of the filter and the piece that the filter screws into that is behind the bumper. I believe you can get the whole setup for about half of what Ford wants just for their hoses! I'd also recommend checking into some good high performance hoses like stainless braided or similar.

just my $.02

I got a price of $91 for the hose assy. from the dealer. That was with my discount (my wife works there). List is like $160. I mean the hoses themselves are in good shape, the leak is from the crimp between the metal tubing and rubber hose. I might try switching oil brands as a temp. fix until the winter is over. (Too damn cold/wet to lay in my driveway for repairs. )
Perma cool has a complete aftermarket setup. For 60 you get one single filter design and for 70 bucks you get the dual filter design.I would do that before I did the dealer thing.....................

I like the looks of that dual filter setup. I wonder if I could route it so I had the filters in the engine compartment with the screw-on part of the filter facing up (no mess!)
Do you think it would significantly affect the initial lubrication on startup?
Well, I guess if you had Motorcraft filters or others with a good silicone anti-drain back and you pre-filled them at oil change time, you'd be OK. And I would recommend you use Aeroquip SS hoses. Don't forget to adjust your oil fill for the larger capacity.
But, personally, I wouldn't do anything to lengthen that path. I'd just replace the existing hoses with Aeroquip. I know that they're very good now, but I still don't like rubber hoses in such a critical spot. In my experience, the threaded end connections (into the castings) have always been common pipe threads. If these are not, that would complicate things.
If the filter is rightside up that would mean that the filter would be empty therfore the oil woulld have to tavel further than it would if the filter was full. I would say it MIGHT have an effect on initail start up. Maybe mount them sideways..............

Good luck!

I had the same idea, but the end castings are not threaded. The ends are cast onto the tubing........The hoses themselves look great, its just the crimp...

No, I'm talking about having the "open" side of the filter facing up, so it's like a bucket of oil.
Something worth checkin into, our shop just got a flyer from Napa showing that they now carry remote oil filter hose assemblys. The one they showed was for a GM 4.3, but they may have something for the Fords.....Can't hurt to give'em a call...
