Need advice on buying a truck

Some months ago, an opportunity presented itself to buy an older Ford truck that has been sitting in a field for over 20 years. The seller lives there, and is the nephew of the uncle that inherited the truck from someone else. The uncle has given the truck to his nephew. I have met both of these guys, and they both tell me the same thing. Of course, they do not have a title for the truck.
Eight months ago, I told them I would buy it, but they had to get the title. I even helped them fill out paperwork to submit to DMV. At this point, I do not know if it has been turned in. They both say they still want to sell me the truck, but I can't get any movement from them to get the title.
So, my question is should I just walk away? Or, am I missing something? Should I do a bill of sale transaction, get the truck, and pursue the title on my own? I just don't want to be stuck with a truck that I can't get titled.
Have any of you been down this road? What is your advice?

Thanks for the help.
