Id tag decoding help

Hello guys. I just picked up a 1964 ford f600 dump truck and I’m hoping you guys can help me find information regarding my id tag. It’s a little hard to see in the picture, but there is a C at the end of the axle code on the tag.

Welcome to FTE!

F61 = F600 gas, 4x2

D = 292 4V Ford Y-block gas V8

R = San Jose assembly plant

451988 = 1964 numerical series, September 1963 production

132 = 132 inch wheelbase

No color code, possibly part of the special order. Looks Orange--was this a state or county truck?

F612 = F600 gas, 23,000 lbs GVWR, hydraulic brakes with 14" x 2 1/2" front brakes

181
1 = Silver gray crush vinyl and light gray crush vinyl
81 = Conventional cab, cab and chassis vehicle. I can't tell if Custom or Standard cab.

J = Clark model 250V five speed direct transmission

G3C
G3 = Eaton model 16802-3 two speed rear axle, 17,000 lbs capacity, 6.50 / 9.04 ratios
C = Ford-Rockwell (Timken) 6,000 lb capacity front axle, without H/D brakes

23000 = 23,000 lbs GVWR

153 3600 = 153 Certified Net HP @ 3600 RPM

741145
74 = Seattle District Sales Office
1145 = Special Order Number

Despite the question above regarding state or county, I would think it unusual for either to buy a truck like this. The 4bbl engine, maybe the 5 speed, but certainly the 2 speed axle would all be items to avoid IMO.

Thank you for the info! Is there a good place to find more info regarding info on the axles and such? I’m not sure what the original purpose of the truck was, but I think it must have been part of a government purchase when it was new. I don’t know how I could ever confirm that though. It has the 5 speed transmission still, but the 292 was replaced at some point with and fe engine.

The Eaton axle will have numbers stamped into the case just above the pinion, and more numbers on the housing--driver side front.

That is if any of this is still readable.....

Front axle will have a tag or numbers cast into it on the back side.

Your current engine could be an FE or an FT.

If you check the exhaust manifolds and see two extra bolts in the center on each side, that will indicate an FT engine.

Also, does your engine mount from the front off the timing cover and off the bell in the back? That is FT mounting. It's not impossible to change an FE to that mounting, but....

'64 was a crossover year, with both the 292 and the 330/361 showing under different codes. It would be an easy change when it was time to repower as all the parts needed are OEM.

My engine does mount on the bell housing and timing cover. On the passenger side of the block I have d8te cast into it. The heads and intake manifold have c4 castings though so I think it must have been pieced together by someone. It’s a 4 barrel intake manifold and looks like maybe the heads and intake came from a car application. I know the block has a 3.5” stroke so I’m thinking if d8 means 1978, then it must be a 360 with early style heads on it. I don’t know the fe/ft blocks though, so any input on it would be greatly appreciated. My truck also has power steering on it. Did these trucks come factory with power steering, or was that an aftermarket system? Maybe that could be part of my d.s.o. Code?

FT heads have (10) exhaust manifold bolts; they have extra flanges (circled in red) to accommodate them.
The matching manifolds have corresponding bolt areas (circled in blue).
This is a fairly easy way to determine if the heads are FT.

Me heads are definitely fe heads and not ft heads then. What were the differences between head design for th fe vs. the ft?

Intake valve is smaller in the FT. Exhaust crossover is in the center vs. offset in the FE. FT exhaust valve may be sodium cooled.

Post a photo of the engine with the air cleaner off and also of the air cleaner
If it has the original air cleaner it is likely a oil bath

Those are FE heads and manifolds, valve coves are pre 65 Thunderbird
Looks like someone built a engine out of parts
