Hi all, I'm new here hope I'm doing this right. I have a 98 Ranger with 4.0L that needs to be fixed after overheating. Considered switching intake for a carb, that's cost-prohibited. What other engine can swap for a 4.0 4x4 automatic?

welcome to the site, please read the site guidelines,
motor wise 4.0l OHV or OHC? rangers there have been a few that got 5.0 v8's installed, if any of the then common kits/parts can still be found

I’m sure 5.0-equipped Exploders and Mountaineers can still be readily found in salvage yards across the country. A ‘98 Ranger would be a nice candidate for that swap.
I would definitely not recommend an OHC 4.0. Not an easy engine to work on. I’d also trust a 4R70 farther than I could throw that A4LD-based transmission behind the 4.0.
Two choices. Another similar 4.0L or the 5.0L Explorer 4x4. If you get the 5.0L you will also need the transmission, the single speed transfer case and drive shafts. and some electronics that match that engine.
