I couldn't find a transmission group so here i am..
iv got a zf5 s5-47 2wd transmission for my 351w and i wanna do a 4x4 conversion on it while im rebuilding it, does anyone know where i can get a 4x4 rear housing for it cause i cant find one for the life of me.. can i just use a rear housing from a diesel trans/ 460 or what?
Even though I have a 1996 F250 4x4 with the 5.8 and zf5, my current trans has the BorgWarner 4407 transfer case on it. I think the rear 4x4 housing piece you are looking for will depend on the transfer case you want to mount on it. Even though the BW1356 seems to be one of the most common, I think there may have been other manufacturers of transfer cases that are compatible with the ZF5.
Correct, and if you've ever overhauled a ZF or done anything like that, you'd just look for a 4x4 ZF to buy
I'm a Ford master tech (Chassis Master 1998) and went to school on those transmissions and the M5OD etc
Those ZF transmissions take thousands of dollars of special tools to get one apart
If you try to skip the special tools and use a hammer and a screwdriver, you will be breaking expensive parts
The internal parts are so expensive, you do not want that
Same as for you right now
A tail shaft and the other rebuild parts, case etc. are going to cost about the same as just buying a decent 4x4 trans IMO
Yup- the rear housing and the output shaft is different.
My sample size is low (just a couple) but I've been finding far more resources for the 5-42
than the 5-47. Are you sure you have the smallblock bellhousing on that 5-47?
The 5-42 seems to usually have the 1356 bolted to it.
-47 received stronger case. Diesel ratios changed, unsure about gasser but pretty sure stayed identical.
I have the rotunda kit I will rent out if needed. You also need internal and external bearing race pullers, small toaster oven to heat parts for install, a way to check end play, and other stuff I am forgetting.
Start with a small four speed or some small five, perhaps a T5 or M5OD.
