The tail housing is the first thing you start with when building a ZF, and the last part left when disassembling it... The front of the housing/bellhousing comes off leaving the 2 shafts and the shift rails standing in the rear housing.
To make a 2wd ZF a 4x4, you need to change the mainshaft and the rear housing. Its not fun.
You can also get a 4x4 ZF from a 2wd F450/F-Superduty. They use a 4x4 ZF with a parking brake bolted where a transfer case would go.
Someone on here has pictures of the bolt holes and where you would have to drill. Its not really recommended and you could end up with a cracked housing if it doesn't hold up. Do a search and you'll be able to find the thread with pictures.

I absolutely guarantee the parking brake tranny will work (as long as its off a diesel...).
Its what I used on my truck when I did the 4x4 swap. I'm not sure why people don't pick up on this as its been posted on here like 100 times....
Ford F834, I'm not so sure about the wide range thing... there are a couple versions of the ZF. The one I took apart that was from a F450 seemed to be the exact same gear ranges as the one from my F250. I had them both apart at one point to swap the case halves (one front case cracked ) and the gears were the same from both. So maybe, but not always.

Interesting. I read the F450's with the parking brake got granny gearing because they didn't have a split t case for a crawl gear option like the 4x4 trucks. I downloaded a PDF that listed specific part numbers and vehicle applications but it only covered thru 91 or 92 I believe. The tag on the side of the tranny should list the gear ratio, but it's good to know what you mentioned in case you are buying on assumption or traveling a great distance to buy one!

Well I got the Tranny back home and was checking it out on the tag it says its a s-42 and doesn't have a ford sign on the tag but their is a Zf remanufactured sticker on the top of the case....so was thinking at Zf they probably used a 4x4 s-42 rebuilt it and put the parking break on the back instead of a transfercase and sold it for the f-450's......just my thought but what a bitch getting that brake off, I beat the **** outta that thing for a half hour before it came off lol

ZF is a German company that makes transmissions. Ford decided it was a good transmission to use as a replacement for the T-19 that was used on 6.9l engines. With a 5th (overdrive) speed it was probably meant to increase fuel mileage.
I can't remember whether or not there is a Ford sign on the ZF label, but I see no reason why there should be one. Ford did not make the transmission, like they did not make the engine (International Harvester/Navistar did).
I can't remember completely, but I believe that ZF also manufactured the parking brake unit used on the F450's. Those trucks used disc brakes on the rear axle, so needed an alternative to the traditional parking brake used with drum brakes. Driveline brakes were nothing new and are still used on lots of vehicles now.
ZF designed the rear case of the 4x4 transmission to bolt up to the transfer cases that Ford was using. They designed the parking brake unit to also bolt up because that means only making two rear case designs (2wd and 4x4/F450). The front case had 3 designs (diesel, 460, and small block) depending on the application.
I'm not sure why you had so much difficulty taking the brake unit off. Mine came off no problem. Perhaps there was some corrosion sticking yours in place.
