Could y'all do me a favor? On 4x4 applications, the ZF5's had two lengths of tailpieces. One was "8-inches-and-some-change" and the other was "10-inches-and-some-change". If one of you with a ZF5 behind your 7.3L could measure the length of your tailpiece from where it mates up with the bell housing/main case and the t-case, I would really appreciate it. My brother and I have a 2x4 ZF5 and it needs rebuilt BAD (shaft bearings are gone I think) and we're gonna convert it to 4x4 when we have it rebuilt. Thing is, there are two lengths of 4x4 tailpieces and shafts... pretty sure the diesels had the short tailpieces because the bell housings were longer on big-block applications. I could be wrong, but either way, I'm stuck. Anybody up to it?
I can throw a tape on the one on the floor when I get home but that won't be until later tonight. I will check back and see if you're still looking for the measurement when I get home.
Diesel 4x4 ZF S5-42 and ZF S5-47 are all the same externally.
You can't compare them to gasser trans becasue they will be different.
Or is that what you need to make sure you are getting a diesel trans?
And I'm not really sure what you need. There is no tail piece on a ZF-5, the t-case bolts right to the transmission. The E4OD has an intermediate housing/mount.
I have a trans sitting here on the floor, I'm just not sure what you want to know.
Tail piece... I guess I mean the rear housing? Not sure. All I know is when I go to order parts, there are two lengths for the rear housings, same for the shafts. I had read that it was a gas/diesel thing... the diesels had shorter rear housings on the 4x4's because of the big-block bells? We have a 2x4 trans and since it needs rebuilt, we're gonna put a 4x4 housing and shaft on the rear and we need to know which one to order.
Both the gas and diesel rear housings are the same, about 8 1/2". The overall length of the main shaft in a diesel 4x4 ZF is about 18 3/4". Hope that helps.
See where the rear half of the case bolts to the front half of the case? I'm looking for how far it is from that joint to where the tail bolts up to the t-case.
