1989 ford f250 5.8 351 4x4 with s5-42 5 speed and 1356 transfer case. My truck recently lost about 6mph under so I replaced speed sensor with cruise, then need feel way below zero and while driving it was about 10 to 15 mph under, cable is the original and seems alright but maybe need to grease or buy a new one, pull cluster cleaned everything while out and needle is back at zero instead of way way under, however while driving needle bounces and is about 15-18 mph under! What are ya’lls thoughts and suggestions? New cable? Or what? Also if it is cable any of you know the proper length specs so I don’t have to pull the whole thing just to measure to order it? Thanks your advice always helps!!!!!
Bouncing needle sounds like the cable to me, I'd start by lubricating it. I haven't had to lube a cable in a long time but I always used to use lock-eze, it's a lube for locks with graphite
Speedo is all mechanical in that truck so it's either the cable, the drive gears in the trans, or the speedo itself. Try disconnecting the cable at the trans and put a drill on it, if the speedo works normally then the gears in the trans are stripped.. they are plastic, but if the speedo doesn't work then good chance the speedo itself is the problem
at one point a few years ago I had been replacing smaller parts on what a 30 year old truck might need. I replaced the VSS on the punkin and the speedo went haywire. above 20 mph and up the speedo-o was flooping back and forth at the range of 40mph constantly. I got another new Vss,, did the same thing. I put the orig. back in and all was better. I have no idea what to replace with if anything goes worng and no clue why the replacements did what they did. If you find a cure,, please let us know
Check the large nut that secures the rear output yoke on thr transfer case. If it gets loose, the speedo drive gear backs out of position and causes the speedo to go nuts. Don't ask how know.😁
