PLEASE HELP! I Lost Power Steering!

2019 F250 FX4

Last night i turned traction control off and did a burnout on a bridge, then…cut a damn donut in a gravel road. Playing around a little. Stupid…I know…but before i even finished the complete donut, I lost all power steering. I mean nothing…nada…zilch.

Lou Ferigno couldn’t drive this thing.

What the heck happened? Is there a fuse or something that might have blown while i was horsing around

I take it your truck has adaptive steering?

I would imagine there is a fuse for the electronic part of that.
You'd want to check the fuse chart in the owner's manual.

I’m not sure about “adaptive” steering but i found a 60 amp fuse in the box under the hood called “active front steering”. Replaced that fuse and it didn’t fix it.

found another fuse in the passenger compartment box called “active front steering module”

just left Napa with that fuse to try it.

wish me luck.

Well…fuse didn’t fix it. Anyone else got any suggestions? I can’t believe this hasn’t happened to someone else.

Was either fuse burnt out?
Maybe that module is bad then.
I'm sure there is a diagnostic procedure in the shop manual for your truck.

i don’t see any obvious signs they were burnt out. Put new ones in and nothing changed so…I figure the old fuses were good.

Adaptive steering is entirely independent of the power steering system and doesn't change the steering effort. You should be looking at your power steering system which is hydraulic, not electronic.

Was there plenty of fluid in it? In 50 years of wrenching on my own vehicles I’ve only replaced one PS pump. And that one was still pumping, just had a seal leak and it was easier to change the pump.

If the system is low on fluid look it over real good to see where it went. I recently worked on a 2008 Grand Marquis with very hard steering. That turned out to be a leaking pressure sensor in the high pressure line.

I guess what I’m really saying is to complete your diagnosis before firing the parts cannon. It could save you some cash.

plenty of fluid in the reservoir and no evident leaks. This failure happened in an instant too. While I was maneuvering a donut in the middle of a gravel road with my steering wheel turned hard to the left.

You need to slow down and diagnose the issue. Jack the front up and put it on stands. Have someone get in the cab and turn the wheel left to right. Look for mechanical issues in the steering hardware. Like Sport45 said, I've never seen a pump just fail like that. It can happen but the fact you had the wheels locked at one end makes me think something mechanical in your linkage is no longer happy.

Looking at the service manual for a "no power assist" condition it lists a thorough visual inspection as a first step. The electronic assist only reduces steering effort but does not remove power steering capability. As others have mentioned, check the simple stuff first. The problem is either associated with the pump or with another steering component.

Check that the power steering pump is being turned by the belt and that the pump has adequate oil level. If you hear power steering pump noise when trying to turn the steering wheel, something is preventing movement. A visual inspection should show this. From the service manual.Visual Inspection Check
  • Fluid level
  • Tire pressure
  • Tires
  • Drive belt
  • Drive belt tensioner
  • Steering column alignment
  • Tie-rod ends
  • Suspension components
  • Steering column shaft U-joints
  • Intermediate shaft bolts
  • Power steering reservoir baffle
  • Power steering reservoir screen
  • Power steering pressure lines, fittings or O-rings
  • Power steering return hoses and clamps
  • Steering gear
  • Power steering pump
  • Power steering fluid cooler (if equipped)
  • Electronic Steering Actuator (ESA) (if equipped)

When my power steering went out, it was because the serpentine belt came off...surely that is not the case here as other stuff goes out too.

solid advice and thanks. Blows my mind too that the pump just shut down like that. I haven’t jacked it up to turn the wheel yet and i really do need to do that. Before i install the new pump that’s what I’ll do just to be sure. I ordered the pump anyway so I’ll return it if i find a different problem. But…i can tell pretty easily that the belt is fine and there no leaks and plenty of fluid. And cal also see the steering linkage pretty good too. Nothing obvious there.
