Removing Fuel Pump

I am sending out my distributor Carburator and fuel pump to get rebuilt. I am having a hard time removing this tab from the bolt to lift the part off to reach the rod. Any suggestions?

It's just a ground strap. Take some pliers and get tough with it if you have to. The hole is likely squished around the threads from having a nut tighten down on it. It might take a small bit of forcefulness but don't let it hold you up. It's easily replaceable, if necessary.

Yeah, they get smashed around the bolt and can be a pita. As I recall, I used to grasp they tab with a pair of pliers and twist it back and forth, as if you were removing it like a nut (that kind of back and forth motion). Then when it becomes loose enough, start forcing a thin bladed screwdriver under it, working it up and down. That will usually get it off.

Thank you. A long screwdriver made short work of the ground strap. How can I clean inside where the rob is?

I wouldn't worry about cleaning the inside as that is the crank case which has all the engine oil!

The rod and inside were very dirty/gummy, that shouldn't be a problem? I cleaned the rod but don't worry about the inside walls? thanks

Well, it could be indictive of the engines oil system health. Older oils would sludge up engines, especially if not regularly changed/maintained.

Are you removing the engine and hot tanking it to deal with the sludged up block? I'm guessing not right now. Don't put anything down there you don't want in your engine oil. That limits you essentially to careful physical removal (careful not to release debris down further into the crank case). Sure, a little marvel mystery oil, seafoam, or similar may help with wiping things up.

If you removed your intake manifold, would it look like this? That is what you are up against...

If you want to clean your fuel pump stand, simply remove it. If it’s not too cold, take it outside with a rag and a splash of gas or diesel and have at it. No gas or diesel, scrape the worst with a screw driver and scrub remains with Dawn dish soap. I like to clean up parts inside and out when I have to remove them for some reason. Not sure why this question turned into such a big deal. Good luck!

Cleaning the already removed stand vs cleaning cavity are two different things.
