Brakes grinding question

So I just installed new rotors and pads on the front. First time doing brakes. I’m hearing a grinding noise. From some googling I think the problem may be the pads fitting too tightly. I had to push one side pretty hard to get them in. Is that likely my problem or something else? If it is the problem, what is a good solution? Grinding the ears to the pass so they fit looser?

Welcome to FTE Catalyst81,

What pads and rotors did you use? It’s possible you have the wrong pads, or they’re cheap junk that doesn’t fit right.

Thanks. Used power stop rotors and pads. Model K3167-36 Z36 and K6271-36. I didn’t do any bedding process. Just pulled the truck out of the garage and heard a loud grinding noise when I stepped on the brakes.

Did you put the correct pads on the inside/outside?
Some pads come with 'ears' that go on the inside so the piston can press fully.
Some manufacturers stopped putting them on, but not all.

The front pads are side specific, as in one pad goes on the inside and one on the outside. Usually they are labeled inner or outer. The pads with the bumps on top (if yours have that) go on the inside.

Also, did you pull out you caliper pins, clean them and the recess they go in, then regrease them with brake specific grease?

Hopefully you cleaned everything, and used brake grease on the various points (ie you watched a few videos). Many people make the mistake of the 'ears' mentioned above, I simply do not know if the brakes you chose have them? A slight mild rubbing is normal until a decent drive and a few braking cycles, between brake thickness and rotor thickness, it might just need a short drive. I would place my hand on wheel to make sure they were not getting too hot. If your brake instructions said to bed them a certain way, do so.

Not so for the power stop pads. They make them identical (no bumps) so you don’t have the issue of putting the wrong one on the wrong side.

I cleaned the caliper pins and greased them and replaced the boots and clips for the pads.

We put Powerstop Z36 rotors and pads in my girlfriend's truck. Powerstop called for a specific bedding. The truck new brakes had a slight grind noise going down the driveway that was never heard again after bedding.

Thanks for the info! I'll look up the bedding process and hopefully that will fix it. Novice mistake not knowing about a bedding process.

If you had to use a lot of force to get one of the pistons to retract, then it may be sticking and keeping a pad hard against the rotor.
