I have a couple of questions about the timing marks and timing on my '85 F150 4.9l. The distributor on my truck was flopping around, clamp had worked itself loose.I found a timing mark on each side of the block, which one do I use? Also can someone give me procedure to set the initial timing.
Pull plug #1. insert a screwdriver into the cylinder as a guide. Turn the engine by hand untill the piston is at the top. Loosen the distributer and turn it till it points at #1. Put back together and start. This will be close enough to get it to run, unless you time it on the exhaust stroke instead of the power stroke.
Thanks, Stace and Time, I appreicate the answers. I seem to remember a post about the timing and having to remove some wiring from the distributor, is that right?

If you've got a Durapark 2. (Ignition module on inner fender) then you just have to pull the vaccum hose off the ditributor and plug it.. You've probably got and TFI-iV, (inginition module on distributor). So you should have a spout connector, On a ranger I had t was just a plug that joined 2 wires. I don't know how to explain to you to find it.
My 84, used to have the TFI-IV, but I converted to the duraspark 2, and never set the time with the TFI. Maybe someone else can tell you exactly where it is.
The spout connector that you need to unplug is connected to the wiring harness that is leading to the TFI module on the distributor.
It looks like just a little black connector with a plug in one end of it. Just remove the plug to set the timing, then shut engine off and replace the plug. Only reason I know this is cause I have done it quite alot here in the last few days
In the instance you have, pull the #1 plug insert screwdriver into hole turn engine by hand, . When the screwdriver starts to come up pull it out and put your finger over the hole. Does pressure build? If so you are on the compression stroke, reinsert screwdriver and continue to turn engine until the piston reaches tdc. Now turn your distibutor until it is pointed at number 1 and you are timed. If when you have your finger over the plug hole pressure does not build you are on the exhaust stroke and you need to keep turning the engine another revolution.
