1. How do I adjust the choke so that the engine will idle when I start it up? Right now, when I start it, I have to give it gas for several minutes before it will idle on it's own and not die.
2. I think the fuel mixture is running on the rich side. How do I adjust that?
sounds like a holley 4180 if it is in this year listing. and yes it probably is running rich, they all did. it sounds like your choke t-stat has gone bad. the power valve in the carb is failure prone for these years. the best idea i can give, is when it is cold, be sure the choke plate is closed. after starting the choke pull off should pull the choke plate open about 15'. after 3-5 min(ford manual 85 460) the choke should be fulley open... The truck is an 81 F-250, with (I'm assuming, since the sticker under the hood says 4.7 L) an aftermarket 460ci gas engine. How can I tell what kind of carb I've got? Is there a name/model # stamped somewhere on it? (I haven't had a chance to look yet.)
if it is a holley it will have a date and model code on the choke horn. that will tell us which carb you have. not sure of the 4.7 though.if it is edelbrock-carter carb, it will be located on either the left or right side of the carb base near the hold down bolt holes.. Kurt
