I'm in the process of purchasing a 1981 F100 shorbed with a 300 six and 4 speed trans. The owner says the truck shifts fine through all 4 gears except if you try to shift fast from 1st to 2nd it sometimes grind's a little going into 2nd. He thinks it's an issue with the synchro's. My question is, I'd like to have that fixed if I make the purchase but have no idea who works on these older transmissions anymore. Any suggestions? I haven't driven the truck yet so I can't offer any other information.
Thanks,
Glenn
Be sure to check the gear lube level. A low condition could cause a hard shift. You say 70,000 original miles, about time to change the transmission lube. Then you can agonize over whether to use GL4 or GL5...
Well if it was me I would want a better, stronger modern trans and that would be the M5OD.
It had better gear spacing, over drive and was used with 300 / 302 / 351 SB motors the 3sp were used with 200 and 302 and not for many years because of the issues it had.
But that is just me.

GL-4 GL-4 and olny GL-4
It has been posted that you can get GL -4 at NAPA but before I knew that I went with Red Line MT-90 as that is what my over drive unit came with so I used it in my NP435 too.

Nothing to do with this thread but curious whether you might know what "Mountains Pass" next to my user name means?

[QUOTE As a guess a high of maybe 5K if everything is in good shape and working.
$5K? Wow, if you know anyone selling an 81 shortbed professionally repainted a few years ago please let me know, I'll buy 2 of them. The paint job would cost $5K at a minimum..[/QUOTE]
i spent 7500 for body paint about three years ago.new engine 4-5 years ago. It was a southern truck
I get at least one person a week wanting to buy it with out a flinch I tell them 15k and it's yours.
From what I see and depending on your area probably up to 10 k.
The days of these being everywhere cheap are gone.
I know its hard for some to wrap their heads around, but
Look for comparables and then compare what 10k will buy you on the used market of any age.

Thanks for that, the one I'm looking to buy is a short bed, so I believe they're a little more desirable and worth a little more.
