I need information about a truck transmission I have been offered. The seller said it is a Ford five speed with the fifth gear being overdrive. He said the guy who gave it to him said it was from a '59 but the person who wants to sell it to me thinks it's from an older truck. He also mentioned it was a Clark transmission. Any one have an idea what this transmission is actually from and if it would fit behind the flat eight in my F-4? Also, what do you think something like this is worth? I am thinking the OD would be nice to have so I could do a little highway driving. Any thoughts about that?
Bob, Clarke did build a 5 speed, I had one in a 43 GMC 6x6 I restored. Ford did use a Clark, but it was in the F 7/8 series, and they had the big motors.
Thanks Barry, I have never heard of a five speed in a Ford truck, at least not in anything up to a F-6 or F-600. I don't anything about what came in the larger trucks, the seller said it might have come out of a school bus. I figured it had to be for a big truck.
I recently rented a F 800 diesel with a Clark 5 speed. Synchro in 2 to 5, it was well worn, hard to shift, and popped out of 2nd under load. Gear spacing was ok, would have been better if I could have split the gears but the 2 speed rear axle wouldn't shift.
You might be better served with a lighter trans.
Is this for show, or are you going logging or rock hauling?
I am going to use my F-4 as driver, no show, just driving around town and an occational drive on the freeway. I didn't know anything about this transmission, whether it would work on a smaller truck or larger truck. I thought it would be kind of cool if I could have OD for highway use. I really didn't think it would work or else there would have been discussions about using this transmission on this board before. Just looking at all avenues and I appreciate the input.
