Sheesh, worse than I would have thought for ya. :/
Makes sense on the lip, retains excess heat. Big issue back in my 6.4 days with cracked pistons, I never had them others did big time. Total hit and miss, even on basically stock trucks. Solution was Maxxforce 7 slugs that were delipped.
Personally I have never seen a piston crack on a 7.3 but seen many posted over the years.
I've taken apart a few stock tuned 7.3 that were neglected or abused, what I usually saw was broken rings banging inside the combustion chamber. I'm in the south west so swallowing dirt is the norm in these engines when they get neglected.
When I rebuild the engine on my 00 the compression rings were razor sharp and had one broken in half, crazy part it didn't destroy the cylinder wall.
Well, I found a donor! I happened to be scrolling FB Marketplace and found this ugly thing. 97 PowerStroke with only 92k miles. Zero blow by. My Yukon was overloaded to say the least, but made it back 400 miles and avoided the law. I'll harvest the engine and scrap the truck. Now I just need to start thinking and making a list of all the gaskets, o-rings, etc. that I need to get.
400 miles? Wow that is a long pull being loaded down like that. How did the Yukon do?
don’t those have a recall for the 6.2? Glad you made it safely
The power was great but suspension was pretty maxed out. I think the 6.2’s may have a recall. They’re hit or miss from what I understand. I just turned over 50k miles on that trip and no issues to date, knock on wood.
