Question 2001 F-250 Roof Seam Sealer Question

Hey all, I'm new to this forum and thought this would be a good place to ask my question.

I just dropped off my truck at a body shop for rust repair and a windshield replacement / reseal (depending on if the old windshield can be reused). They will be repainting the roof since that is where the rust is. This will hopefully solve my water intrusion issue. Every time it rains I find water pooled on the driver side floor matt. The water gets in and drips onto the fuse block causing all sorts of electrical issues. Luckily we haven't had much rain recently so most of the electrical issues seem to have remedied themselves.

Okay so back to my question. While going over the work to be performed with the body shop manager, he mentioned that they plan on removing the seam sealer from the roof and just leaving it bare. He explained that the reason that they do it this way is because the seam sealer tends to shrink over time leading to the paint cracking. The factory seam sealer that is on there seems to be in pretty good condition and there isn't any rust around that area. I'm assuming that it can't be reused if the roof is getting painted? Will it be fine if it is stripped out and painted over without resealing?

To those out there with experience in this field, does this seem like the right approach or are they just trying to cut corners?

Looking for some input on this before things get too far along in the process. They said that they should have my truck done in about 7-10 days.

Too late to ask you to post a pic of the seam sealer?

I can't picture what seam you are talking about.

But, I also wonder if over-riding what your guys want to do will produce great results. If you decide you want seam sealer...are you willing to bump the truck to someone who always does that?

I am thinking he is talking about the drip rail sealer that is different than seam sealer and will has dried and cracked.
I dont know if drip rail sealer has changed much over the years to not shrink & crack but the last seal sealer I used when I replaced my floors, rockers and cab corners I dont see doing that unlike the old seam sealer used on my truck back in 81 from the factory.

I would ask them how they plan to seal the seam so water dose not leak into the seam?
How long will they stand behind their work when done that way as there is a reason why the factory did it that way?

Oh. Yes...the drip rail sealer on my '90 was cracked.

+1 for Dave's question to the body shop.

I am part way through doing my cab. I am not replacing the sealer. I hope my paint system will do the job. If I detect it not working--that is rust--I guess I will go back to sealer.
