Is this the correct distance between the timing gear and block? I'm having trouble pressing the gear on further with a punch and hammer. Any suggestions?
Put the cam gear on and see if they match up that will tell you. typically the gears aren't that hard to get set it shouldn't take a big hammer. so it's probably there.
I had the cam gear working in unison with it while it was at multiple depths of installation. I'm not sure if that's a reliable indicator. I'm mostly worried about endplay caused by the timing gears being too far out, though I don't know if that can cause that.
Many diesels have the same set up. the gears don't need full contact to work, but they should be lined up and in full engagement they're always designed that way. if your cam gear it bottomed out and it is aligned with the cam gear then it should be correct.
I can't see in your picture, but the gear will always come up solid against the crank step. there is no slack or adjustment to be made. if there's any doubt pull it off and look at it then you'll know where it should stop.
