Looking at a Ford F6 circa 1949 ish. Firewall plate has 98RTH223532 on it. Have not located owner as yet - it is in storage. Can anyone tell me about it. I can't find a decoder for that few characters. Like to know which engine and tranny it has. thank you!
9= 49-50 serial prefix
8R= 239 flathead V8
TH= F6
223532= consecutive unit number most likely puts the truck square into the 1949 year era.
Nothing in the serial number will identify the transmission. It will have a 4 speed, could be spur gear crashbox or the desirable synchro-silent T98. The synchro-silent equipped trucks usually had a sticker on the dash or header next to the sun visor with a shift pattern. Reverse is up toward the dash on the T-98 where it is down, toward the seat on the crashbox.
You might have your police do a vin check before you buy just to be safe. That serial number is in the data I've been compiling and listed as a 49 F1 with a 6 cyl engine. 97HC 223532
The info is sketchy so it was collected back in the early days when we knew less about this data. It could be a mistake on my end or yours and might just be a typo? Or something more nefarious.
Be sure and look at the frame number/title number to verify.
Frame is stamped on top of the passenger side near the radiator mount.
