Cowl Stampings

Good Afternoon all checked the cowl stampings on my 49 F1 but wow they didn't use much force with their hammer that day. Tried to pencil shade over but not much help I think the stampings are HP15F4-31816. Now with that said the H could be a 4, the P could be a D, pretty sure of the1&5, the F could be a P, and the 4 is a guess because can't think of anything else it looks like. After the dash pretty able to read. Is this good enough to guess a production date? The engine number or vehicle number is 97HC2069** and Branch SP. Thank you Jim

Your HP should be SP as that will match your branch code. 15F is the assembly date June 15, 1949. Is your truck Birch Gray perhaps? That would explain the number 4. The rest is an internal code used at the factory. It has no other correlation to the truck other than for factory tracking.

Interesting that several other SP trucks in the first half of '49 didn't indicate a color code in the firewall stamping.
Second half of '49 they started including it at the front of the stamping.

Hey there it is pretty straight lines to be an S but as I said they didn't strike it to hard to be definitive. Looks to be a green paint will try to get a picture to go along with my interpretation. By the way really like the community feel of this group thank you for your input. Jim

Hi Jim, some of the stampings are pretty faint and irregular. You might check the top of the frame rail near the motor mount x-member - usually on the passenger side.
The only confusing thing is the glovebox rating plate, the firewall data plate, the firewall/cowl stamping and the frame stamping should all have the same assembly plant indicated. HP is Highland Park MI, and SP is Saint Paul, MN. Your truck could have come from either one.
It wouldn't be the first one we've seen that was struck wrong - the Monday/Friday thing
Tim
