Walked out of work today and saw a puddle under my front tire. I looked up under there and there's a gray/green fluid all over my knuckle, ball joints, brakes and caliper, hub, etc. Not really sure what it is but it doesn't go any higher than this. Its on the passenger
side if that helps. I am confident it isn't coolant as mine is bright red. Any ideas on where to start or what to check? Anyone else have similar issues? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks for reading!
Could be differential fluid, though I don't know how to explain it being above the axle tube, unless it migrated via surface tension or got slung while 4WD was engaged. Diff fluid has a distinctive smell so that would be a sure tell.
For clarification I drove it home after and wasn’t too abnormal of a drive and I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t see. Also I have manual locking hubs upgrade
Axle lube is my guess. Mine dripped on the passenger side after doing the seals and ball joints. Thought I had messed up the diff seals when I slid the axles back in. Kept a watchful eye on the diff fluid level and eventually the dripping stopped, and the level was fine. Just keep an eye on your diff fluid level.
Ok so it is 100% an axle seal leak as I have almost no diff fluid left. Couple of questions - how do I know which seal to replace? Can i just do the one on the axle or do i need to do the one in the diff?
Crazy idea - but could I just drive with unlocked hubs and no diff fluid? Obviously wouldn’t be able to use 4WD but this is how I get to work so the faster I can use it the better. Would get it fixed a weekend im free and have parts if this is the case
Like @TooManyToys. said, definitely inner seals. I think you have to have a special tool to properly seat those, right?
Yeah, this stupid thing. Then there's the outer dust shields or whatever that are completely useless as they just pop off after a few days/weeks and that's even after taking the time to properly clean the knuckle and seat them properly
