Finally joined FTE! Doing a full restoration on a 1977 F-150 4x4, and was looking at the best way to go for new front end/body mounts. Probably over a dozen choices out there but from what I've read, some distributors have better products than others. Thanks!
WELCOME!.... (is the first time I was the first to say so) Are you doing it body off frame, replacing frame parts like the steel riveted on mount pedestals ... or ... are you just replacing the rubber itself? The term "full restoration" means different things.to different people. Some I'd be hesitant to drive for fear of adding a scratch. Some, I'd work.
I have a 1977 F-150 4x4 too, since 1986. Put polyurethane front suspension bushings / C-bushings in along with changing to '78-'79 tie rods, drag link, pitman arm and adjustment sleeve in the late '80s soon after purchase to eliminate the horrific bump steer and make it drive better, in one lane even.
A couple years ago, bought bushings for the cab, etc but after looking and studying on it, I just added girdles to mine to support the rubber under compression, and put the poly set on a shelf.
Yep, body off frame. Was looking at replacing all rubber, bolts, nuts & washers. Front set for radiator core support were too bad to salvage and will need to be replaced. I know that LMC, Jeff's BG, Dennis Carpenter, and a host of others sell them, I'd rather go with a set that will last longer than I do. Are they all the same, or are some better than others?
LMC sells energy suspension brands which is a quality name. I went with poly so I’d never have to replace them in my lifetime. Not sure about ride quality differences, but probably better than the old blown out rubber.
Poly mount on anything is always going to be harsher than rubber and more noisy as well. They squeak a lot. The tradeoff is that they last forever and firm up any slop in the suspension or body mounting.
Make your choice. My personal opinion regarding trucks like ours that are never going to be corner carvers is that rubber is the better choice.
The only place I used poly was for the sway bar bushings.
Many options out there. I am a fan of poly bushings. I have used both Energy and Prothane, but dont forget the right hardware. I used a kit from this eBay seller and was very impressed.
