Tranny swap?

Hey All
Last monday I bought a 99 F-150 w/ 4.2 and 5 spd tranny. Well Friday went out to go to school and put my truck in reverse and heard a loud pop. So now I have no reverse and it makes noise in every gear and neutral. Since I hadn't driven it much Im supposed to have warranty on it but wont find out until wednesday. My question is if this thing isn't covered under warranty I want to swap in a stronger transmission. I read somewhere that I have a m5r2 Is this correct? What other transmissions swap in directly without any major mods? Will a ZF out of 3/4 ton fit in it and bolt to a 4.2? Thanks everyone.
Richard

Sorry to hear about your loss after only a week. You have the puny Mazda 5-speed now. I am not sure on the ZF. If you has a donor truck, it should have everything that you need to swap that I would think. Others may know more,

If you want to haul or tow anything, Iwouldn't advise the manual tranny. It is very weak.

Bolt pattern should be same on V6, 4.6, & 5.4. Can't say about direct swap from F250. The 4.6L F250Ld '97-'99 could be bought with a 5 sp as was F150 but I don't know if it was ZF. I did read a thread about a month ago converting from Mazda trans to ZF. Try a search for it if he doesn't show up here. The 5.4 only came with an AT unless you count the SuperDuty which had available 5 sp and recently 6 sp which were ZF. SD did not come with 4.6 or V6 so you'd have to use the 5.4L model (V10 and PSD are definitely different). They have a different frame/body so again I don't know if it would swap directly. The post about Mazda/ZF swap probably dealt with the previous generation ('87-96) F150. It would likely be applicable to newer models if you can determine if no changes have been made externally on the transmissions since then. You would probably want to stay in the same year model range for using same yokes, u-joints, speedo cable, etc. Again I have no info on a ZF in this F150/F250LD body style but it might have been available. I have more knowledge on the older trucks and if you can verify same trans as those then you can apply the swap info mentioned there. I'll look for the thread later. I would not be surprised if SD model would bolt up but since it is a different frame & body, I would be extremely concerned about the shifter and the floorboard clearance.

As for fo69rd, you can get the same trans that every one else doesn't like and possibly the ZF models if we can get more input. Rebuilts are similar in price AT vs. MT but you still need clutch/pressure plate assembly, flywheel, pedal and brackets plus new brake pedal, steering column pieces, slave cylinder/master cylinder. I'd rather swap trucks than do a conversion on these but very possible. PCM is not as critical as it would be for a MT to AT conversion but each has a different computer.

Anyone need a rebuilt trans try blumenthalmfg.com/ Click on Contacts, go to light duty and e-mail Larry Church. No sales tax on out of state phone/internet orders and shipping generally next day (FEDEX Trucking) <$100 ret. frt. on core included. They have every trans available for any car, truck, equipment and are the cheapest authorized ZF distributer I could find and service is great.

The 4.2 and 4.6/5.4 engines have different bellhousing bolt patterns so they wont bolt up.
A ZF is a pretty tall transmission. I wonder what if it would clear the floor and how low it would hang.
The Spazda M5OD really isnt that bad unless you abuse it lots.
