Fuel gauge
(does NOT have Flex Fuel)
A few weeks ago I was working under the truck making a repair to the wiring harness (I jumpered around the wiring connector - for the Evap Vent Control Solenoid wire - on the driver's side on the outside of the frame). After the repair I cranked the truck and the fuel gauge was on "E". After killing the truck and jostling the wiring harness connector the gauge started working. After driving it a short while the gauge dropped back to "E".
Since the wiring harness connector under the drivers side on the outside of the frame has given me so much trouble I guessed that the issue was in that connector. I stripped some insulation (didn't cut the wire) from the yellow/white wires, and I jumpered around the connector with alligator clips. When I started the truck the fuel gauge went to "F". I removed the jumper and gauge stayed on "F". Then I cut the yellow/white wire and the gauge stayed on "F". Then I cut the black/orange wire and the gauge still stayed on "F".
I did a gauge sweep check on the instrument cluster and all the gauges checked out okay. I also repaired the two cut wires (made a jumper around the wiring harness connector).
My question: Is the fuel gauge at fault? By cutting the sender wires I don't see how the gauge could read full.
