I was getting on the freeway the other day (96 f350 7.3 crew cab dually) and it made a loud thunk and started vibrating really bad, until I was under 10 mph, I tried to accelerate but the vibration was really bad although it was shifting gears smoothly, I stayed on the shoulder at about 30mph. Got to a hill and gave it just a little more throttle and boom another loud thunk and now every gear selector position is neutral. I’m thinking transmission. Or rear end? When it’s running and I take it out of park (also neutral in my case) and put it back in park it grinds.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
I would start with the easy stuff. Is the driveshaft still on and working? You can jack up the rear and with the trans in nuetral, try to spin the driveshaft by hand. Should be easy to figure out if the diff is damaged.

That indicates that it is NOT the transmission, but something downstream. If it's a 4x4 it could be the transfer case. It could be a u-joint or the differential, too.

thanks I’ll try that tomorrow morning!
it is 2wd so no transfer case

I did a Quick Look on the side of the freeway when it broke but I’ll definitely get deeper into it tomorrow morning

That means something aft of the transmission is broken. Being a dually, it's 2wd (or came from the factory that way). I bet the driveshaft turns and the wheels don't. Use a friend/wife/father in law to watch or sit in the driver seat to verify.
EDIT:
How did the initial replies not show up when I first replied? Oh well you have your answer.

appreciate it!
I’ll update after I jack the rear end up and check tomorrow
I jacked up the rear end and put it in drive and crawled under, the u-joint at the back of the transmission was snapped, it broke the cast strap on the drive shaft as well, looks like it’s time for a new drive shaft!
