weird spring

weird spring

I found these weird springs, five of them inside the timing cover of a 1983 Ranger 2.9. Does anyone in here have a clue as to the purpose for these? any help would be greatly appreciated.

83 should be a 2.8 unless replaced sometime, but never found springs in timing cover of either engine.
