I have a 1995 F250XL. Installing new fuel pump module. When hooking up, fuel gauge moves properly. As soon as I install the fuel return line, the fuel gauge goes to empty. I've never seen anything like this before. I've checked and rechecked the wiring. It acts like the fuel line is grounding out the signal. Any help would be appreciated!!
What fuel pump did you buy, specifically?
Brand, and what website or store?
Did you modify the wiring at all, or use the crimp style butt splices?
The fuel pump ground is in front of the windshield washer bottle, on the upper radiator support.
Here's a thread on ground points. Check out posts 6 and 7: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nd-points.html
In response:
OReilly Auto Parts Fuel Pump. Precision Fuel Pump PFP A47134. The wiring is temporarily jumpered. When you remove the wire for the fuel gauge, the gauge goes to maximum, past Full. When installing the fuel return line, as long as the outer part of the connection doesn't touch the fuel nipple, the fuel gauge works properly. Currently, fuel pump is not installed. This is the second fuel pump, and still having the same issue. Everything was working properly when we removed the old module. This was an original FOMOCO pump and module.
Thanks for the help!!
I'd say you need to verify that the correct harness wires are connected to the pump positive, pump negative, ground and level wires at the pump.
I can't see the details of those connections, in the O'Reilly's pictures.
I did that after the first new pump. The issue happens as soon as I hook up fuel return hose. I've even changed the fuel level module out. It seems as if the fuel line has some sort of grounding issue, but am not sure at this point.
Check out the grounds in post 2 and check for wiring harness damage along the frame going toward the front of the truck.
The main ground from the battery negative terminal to the engine block, has a frame connection. That's worth checking out.
Thanks. I have installed several of these without issue. I may be wrong, but at least my prior experience tells me that that there is some sort of grounding issue, and not a fuel pump issue. I was hoping someone else has had this happen.
