just got my truck back from the dealer after bringing it in for engine knocking on cold start.they say it`s not piston slap, and it`s normal for the v10 ,takes a few seconds for oil to circulate. I SAY BULL! I never herd such a thing in my twenty years of gear heading. but that`s what i kind of expected from the dealer anyway. at least i`ve started a paper trail. I also did a oil change and started to use mobil 1 5w-30w . the old v10 still knocks on cold start but not as bad and not as long. still like the truck and still like the power of the v10 hopfully it will keep running strong.

Well I tell ya bud, mine doesn't sound like piston slap either, but that's what it is in my case anyways. It sounds JUST like valve train clatter, I would bet money that it's valve train clatter but it aint valve train noise at all, it's piston slap. Even when the dealer is admitting to piston slap they still aren't admitting that there is any problem and it will not affect engine life or drivability. Good luck, from another V-10 owner with piston slap. (Mobil 1 10W-30 DOES quiet the noise almost completely if that means anything to ya, but the newer V-10's call for 5W-20 so you'll have to take that into consideration).
I have a 2003 V10....I HAD piston knock. Which made me up set because I got rid of A 2001 GMC HD with the 6.0L. The king of all cold piston slap engines. It was aweful, the reason why I baught a Ford. When that fist cold morning and the V10 was knocking away....needless to say I was upset. I did some research. There is a oil on the market that is tough to find but the stuff works. Amsoil 5W-20 works wonders. I live in Massachusetts where it does get cold in the winter and ALL and I mean ALL of the cold start knocking has stoped!!!! That is no joke. It is well work the $6 a quart....and even better it is the only synthetic that actually states it is a 7500 mile or 6 month oil change. I put on 25K a year so....a real time saver
I do a lot of reading here and on a couple other sites. The one in particular that is helpful with oil stuff is bobistheoilguy.com
I have found with my V10 that it is very sensitive as to which oil filter I use rather than the oil itself. I've run Mobil 1 from 22,000 and I have 48,000 on the truck now. I noticed the loudest knock with both the pure one filter and the mobil1 1 filter. Currently I'm running the Bosch filter and have very little to no morning knock. I've also had good luck with the WIX.
Seems the better the filtering the slower the flow rates. Oil flow is the key to quiet starts. It sure does get cold up here in cow Hampshire.
My truck has 37,000 miles on it now and I still have not experienced cold start knock. I start my truck at temperatures as low as -30 to -50 and there is no knock. I run mobil 1 5w30. One thing that may differ though is as a general rule here if it is colder than +20, plug it in. Have you tried plugging in your vehicle for a couple hours before start up and see if it still knocks? If it doesn't, maybe that is something to consider doing.
