I’m needing to find out how the shift fork is removed from the steering column so I can pull the shift tube out. The 1979 light truck shop manual shows the exploded view on page 13-06-10, but there’s nothing in the instructions explaining how it’s removed. 13-06-10
I have everything taken apart except pulling the shift tube from inside the column housing, the shift fork keeps it from sliding out. I can’t see on the exploded view or anything in the manual that indicates how it’s retained on the shift tube? Is it possible the shift fork is a press fit on the shift tube?
I sprayed the fork with PB blaster before I came in last night and figured I’d see if it would come apart today. I put the shift fork in a bench vice and placed a brass hammer across the end of the column time and used a small hammer to hit the brass one and after a few raps it came apart.
