My Abs light came on and I checked the rear sensor. When I removed it, it had gouges and material scratched away unevenly up the side of the sensor. Is this normal wear & tear or could there be a bigger problem causing the marks?

Absolutely not. The sensor does not touch anything. It works by the teeth on the tone ring passing by the magnet in the sensor. There is supposed to be an air gap in between the two parts.
Right, sure sounds like one of the carrier bearings is worn and allowing the carrier to walk up and into the sensor
There is only about .080 of clearance between that sensor and the exciter ring
Maybe a broken piece of a gear got wedged up in there, and stuck by the magnet, only to start grinding down the sensor
Either way, a tear down and inspect is in order
Replacing bearings now is easier now than replacing a gearset and the bearings later
