What are some quick, easy, and cheap performance mods for a 302. I've got a flowmaster 40 series on it now. I've looked into new valves and lifters. Also looked into underdrive pulley kits. Any advice?
Headers and pullies help out alot, also open up the airbox and get a K&N airfilter or just get a K&N FIPK. I've done alot of bolt ons and they all add up
They slow the speed the accesseries turn freeing up horsepower. The set I'm running has smaller alternator, waterpump and crankshaft pullies so I had to buy a shorter belt when I put them on. Some people will tell you not to bother with pullies on a truck but I've been running mine for almost 2 years and have had zero problems.
ahhh - now I understand why the info for them at performanceproducts said "your accessories will still run fast enough" - so your explanation clears it up - thanks ! btw they were $117 for 87-06 fords
pullies are a waste so is the fipk. dont open your air box if you wheel cause your askin for trouble. the open eleminte (cone) filters do allow more air flow but bring in HOT air from under the hood. this doesnt help. Headers is a good step along with the rest of the exhaust redone. single 3" pipe works great. larger throttlebody and intake upgrade would also help out alot. your motor is efi and speed density so you can install a better cam but must be suited for computer controlled motors. CompCams can set you in the right direction there. if your dead set on a fipk type setup then make your own for about $60 vs 200+ for the actual kit. do a search many have made there own with good results but still pulls in hot air. cold air creates power so a basic drop in filter would do just as well.
late
k&n filter in the stock box. Buy from ford dealer the intake tube ($15) that fits the f-250 w/460 engine (search for the post) yes it fits the f150, it just takes the air from the side and not the top and gives better flow. Magnaflow muffler (straight thru & good sound) to replace stock one ($50?). Bump the timing a degree or two, just until you hear it ping then back it off a little-adds response and a little hp (free). Headers work in the upper rpms, shorties bolt to stock pipe, stay with 2.5" or 2.25" pipe on the exhaust or you lose low end torque. KEEP the O2 sensors in the stock location, then spend the money you have saved on a performance chip or tuner. underdrive pullies under $70 and about 5hp on the upper end.
TOTAL under $500.00 without the cost of headers.
Hope this helps
Randy
chips are a waste unless you have a built motor that needs one. torque is the game here, your motor shouldnt see rpms above 4500rpms so anything that helps upper end power wont do you any bit of good.

Just tryin to give some ideas. I've used most of these on my truck and do seem to make a difference. The difference may be that speed density is used for his application and I'm not overly familiar with it. good luck
Kemicalburns: i think the chip made a big improvement, don't have a built motor-but a 10%hp increase was worth the money. it gave me the highest increase of all the mods I've installed without tearing anything apart beyond my limited mechanical ability. Where in oregon, I'm from idaho and stationed here in VA.
95 f150. for sure its all good. reason for pullies is we are usually running alot of accessories like lights,cb,stereo systems ,winch so the pullies would have an advers afect on the electrical system. the chip cost you what 300 bucks, and you gained 10% in power that really isnt that much bang for your buck. and for the fipk you can make your own for less that is my main point with that one.
It's all good, I agree the fipk is to much money for what you get. I put the K&N drop in filter in and cut the bottom of the airbox off. For 40 bucks I kind of have a fipk with a heat shield. Open element air filters in the summer time kill horsepower once underhood heat soak sets in.
