...or have anyone on hand that can build it. Which is wild for a simple trans. Any shop I ever step at that gives me some song and dance, I leave.

The biggest irritants are alignment shops that claim I need weights for my euro cars and saying TTB cannot be aligned. Yes, I bring the data specs for oddball units.

Did you even read the first post where the shop told him the C6 would not pass I/M?

It came with a C6. I'd like to have it rebuilt but can't find anyone in the neighborhood who works on the old stuff like that. So, I've been looking for a rebuilt one to replace what was in the truck.

I think you are right. They don't generally check emissions on a safety check here, so it caught me off guard when the shop said it wouldn't be street legal to replace the transmission with one of the same type.

Yup. That is what I planned to do. Didn't think it would be a problem. So far 3 places have told me they don't work on the old stuff like that. Certified Transmission said they only do repair/install and I don't have an engine in the truck to have them install a trans. TCI said putting their unit in wouldn't be street legal.
I haven't worked on stuff like this for a long time so I'm not up to speed on the situation. I used to build engines in the 1970's for dirt track cars (sprint cars, primarily) and for tractor pullers, so I'm familiar with the engine side of things before everything was hooked up to a computer.

personally I feel like if you rebuilt engines you’d be able to rebuild a C6. they aren’t as complicated as most auto transmissions. I know you said you don’t have a good shop so that doesn’t help. You may need a few specialty tools. You’d have to pay close attention on disassembly and get everything really clean. I’m not recommending you do that but I would at least research it if you haven’t already. I think the standard reply from TCI is they are non emissions compliant. Did you tell them your truck originally came with a C6?

Is the problem that a shop won't put the transmission in that you want? Sorry, I didn't read the thread. I'd install whatever trans ya want and deal with emissions, they're not going to check and they won't be able to tell a difference the way they're testing.

I’m a little confused about one thing. If you don’t have an engine in the truck why to you need a transmission installed by a shop? Can’t you buy a transmission and put a rebuilt transmission in yourself? You could do that in your driveway. Are you going to be the one to install the engine? I bought an A4LD from PATC for the Bronco II and have been very happy with it so far. I know they have different levels of rebuild from stock to performance oriented.

I think he was saying the shop wouldn’t sell him a trans unless they installed it. That’s how shops around here are at least. They are scared you won’t get the converter all the way on and trash the pump and they will get a bad rep for it unfairly.

I certainly don't blame any shop for requiring the install to honor a warranty. Too many "driveway wrenchers" install transmissions with catastrophic failure guts clogging the coolers for anyone to honor a warranty.

Anyone that own/runs an automotive shop, would totally understand why rebuilders do not want to sell you a trans over the counter.
