My '04 with 199k miles began spraying raw fuel out the exhaust; classic stuck injector symptom. I did my homework and learned it was about six hours of shop time and about $800 for injectors, figuring no way could it be more than $3,000 for everything. I took it to the nearest independent diesel shop and big mistake, left it without asking how much. They came back with a $7,600 total. When I said, "Thanks, but no thanks," they hit me with a $500/2hr diagnostic fee to confirm what I had told them was the problem.
I checked with a recommended indy shop in the next small town about forty miles up the road and he came back with a $3500 firm price and I probably should have let him have it.
Instead, I bought a "150,000-mile-kit" with premium remanned injectors, glow plugs, harness, gaskets, oil filter, et al. and had a shadetree friend-of-a-friend do the R&R (it's COLD up here now). I supplied oil and filter plus the two fuel filters. Injector kit was $1650, his labor was $1500, $240 for oil and filters; so $3400 for everything.
Just got it back today and all is good. It starts more quickly, idles smoother, runs stronger. Will be interested to see how the mileage is affected. Hoping for another 200k; so far, so good.

6 hours for 8 injectors seems rather low, but I ain't a Ford mechanic or "tech" lol. Also $7600 just to do injectors is a FKN JOKE and $250/hour for diagnostic fees is ridiculous and I would have fought tooth and nail to get down to 1 hour just on principal alone.
Curious what kind of google reviews this shop has.
Just returned my injectors for a core charge refund. Amazed at how clean they were after 20 years and 200k miles.
Also amazed at how much better the engine feels with eight new ones. Smoother, more power, quicker response. Expensive fix, but at least it feels worth it.
