Pulling hard left when braking
I just purchased a 2003 V10 excursion 4x4. On the way home from purchase (wife followed me home), i noticed an intense braking smell and hard pulling to left while driving and also while braking. Wife took a video and said sparks were flying out from what looked like my tail pipe (later realized its from the rear passenger side brake).
Currently:
Thanks to this forum, I searched and found it's probably caliper related on my front driver side and maybe some other related issues as well? So I pulled the slider pins, cleaned and regreased as instructed. The calipers pistons don't seem to be frozen as I had to push the pistons in to remove the caliper from the rotor. Brake pads had lots of life, rotors seem good. Now its braking much better than before but still slightly pulling left. I only tested it for a few minutes down my farm road at around 40mph. I didn't notice any smell or sparks but I'm scared to death it will happen again. should i do the same cleaning on the rear passenger side as well? Or is the front still not quite 100%
I'd be all over that thing. Best to check all 4 brake calipers, and hell do a brake bleed to to get some fresh fluid in those lines.
The slide pins are notorious on these for getting stuck.
If you just got it in your possession I'd check the whole truck front to back, top to bottom. Brakes, cooling, ball joints, exhaust, steering, 4x4, etc..
Enjoy. There is a wealth of info here. Even if you don't get a quick reply there are tech folders and a search feature that should get you pointed in the right direction.
when greasing the slide pins/ bores, I'd suggest using a silicon grease/ lube, not your typical brake parts lube. Many use the wrong grease which dries up or gets gummy, causing the same issues in short time.
Sil glyde or super lube are great examples. sil glyde can be found at napa, not sure if other stores have it under a different name. these are also great for o-rings and other uses
