the one with the 2 pics is from a 99 f150 4.6 auto and the single picture is my daily 97 f150 4.2 5spd my rear end in the daily is on its way out and i have the 99 axel on hand i’m wondering about interchangeability is it a straight plug and play swap? has anyone ever done such a thing?
Do you want to change the housing and everything, including brakes, or just the internals? The internals should swap easily, The bottom two pics show an 8.8 limited slip with 3.55 gears. 3 L 55 8 8 . The top looks open but can't be sure because of the dirt. "dirt" 55 8 8. Probably open since that's what most 4.2 5 speeds came with.
If you want to swap everything the paper tag on the axle tubes will give you more information.
If "way out" just means bearing noise it might be cheaper to just install new bearings.
Anyway, some or all of what you have should swap easily. Two 8.8's.
