I'm in the market for a used work truck. If I go diesel, it will need to be pre-emissions so 1999-2003 and OBS 7.3 PSDs would work if I can find one in ok condition. How's the engine access for repairs and maintenance on these two body styles? It seems like there is more room in the OBS trucks? And what about raising the cab, is this required for any 7.3 PSDs or is this something that impacts the newer Ford diesels like the 6.7? Thanks in advance for any comments.
pre emissions? here in colorado, there is emissions on any diesel.
It's always easier to lift the cab even on a 7.3 or 6.0, but not as necessary on them. I've done any work needed on my 7.3 without lifting the cab. In my area, OBS are just as much as 99-03. as much as i like the OBS, I like the interior my superduty way more.
either way, shouldn't be an issue to work on it when needed
Being you are from NY area, I'd be more concerned about the body rust on the entire truck.
Working on the engine is just a matter of learning how to remove parts to make your repair and putting it all back together. No reason to lift body off a 7.3.
When I replaced my turbo, I lay down over engine on moving blankets... My spouse brought me a pillow after dark, and asked if I was going to sleep in there ?!?!
I'm short, so I need a step stool, and put a folded moving blanket up on the core support so the hood latch doesn't gut me. Do the superman pose while I'm up there, lol. But the truck isn't too terrible to make things happen. There's enough room for most work

There's always this option. I keep telling myself I'm going to get one of these or make one that hooks to the front receiver hitch of my Ranch Hand bumper. Maybe someday I'll get around to it.
Oh yeah. I've had one in my cart a couple of times but never pulled the trigger. Don't have room to store it. Garage is at capacity. If I had a proper shop though...
I can't get the amazon link to work...I'm guessing it's one of those stools that let's you lay over the engine bay.
I use a costco stool to get to my bumper then go to work...but I'm just a little guy and resilient. My best friend gave me one of those tire steps, I use that on occasion too, great accessory for working on things from the side and can be a good workout for the calf muscles.

But it's foldable. There's always room for something foldable.

Either body style buy the best condition you can get. Buy a 7.3 with best truck around it.
