When I swapped out 400’s in my ‘79 F-250 I painted the replacement 400 Ford red, used on the Y-blocks sometime in the 50’s. Confused alot of folks that didn’t realize Ford ever used red on the v8’s.
I'll receive the engine this week so I started working on some of the parts I have on hand. I decided to go with the lighter blue. Partly because I think they lightened up the blue as the 70's wore on and partly because I ordered ford blue paint and this is what they sent me lol. Again, not going for OE resto correct but more of a stock "type" of look.
Prob not correct but this is a late 70’s engine in a 1966 truck I took this before removing the canister off the side of the air filter Edelbrock performer 460, nothing special. This will be roughly a 350hp engine. I considered using the factory intake but I’m not a fan of how they deleted the egr passages… like they hammered something in there. My thinking was use the edelbrock because it’s a clean slate and save a little weight
@PoolFixer
Looking sweet on the fresh paint.
Do you know the cause of the dead cylinder ?
Did a valve stick and bend a push-rod, thence a dead cylinder. _ _ just curious.
I have had valves stick running old fuel (10-yr old fuel in large tanks).
Oh, anyways, I use Royal Blue from the local Ace Hardware either in aerosol or brush-on in the half-pint cans.
I think my Ford 300 is painted Ford Blue. Those 300's remind me of a Ford 2000 engine, loong and straight. LoL

Enjoy !
I didn’t get into any heavy diagnosis other than compression test. - it ran perfect but low on power, 7 of 8 in the 140 range , one was 110. It was using a lot of oil too. but this is a bone stock 70’s smog engine.
Before I could really formulate a plan, a fully rebuilt engine appeared through the 460 forum. I got a very fair deal on it so it made more sense to swap this one in.
Very nice, and looking great! In my own truck, I have what appears to be a rebuilt (.20 over) 73' 76' 390 4v in my 66' camper special. As it is a 66' truck, the Ford blue works and looks right for my taste. However, I want to change the valve covers to stock style and find the oil bath air cleaner, so that it looks original at first glance. If I can, I will go with headers, I am not that much of a purist. Oh, and I agree with FuzzFace2, I would make up some stickers that look stock, but reflect the (when confirmed) 390, and HP ratting.
