01' E250 extended cargo van side mirrors

Godd afternoon,

Is there a way to tighten up my oem passenger side mirror? The mirror itself mounts to the base on the van via the arm. The arm swivels in the base and its too loose. Just the nature of closing the door or riding down the rd, the wind will push the mirror eventually towards the van window.
How can I tighten this up please?

Thank you and happy early Thanksgiving.

Sid

You will need to replace the mirror most likely
Not possible and tightening the pivot is futile IMO
Most new mirrors do not have anything in there to tighten the pivot (no nut and spring since the eighties)

Mirror tension adjustment

Good morning and thank you for the help. Surely Ford would have figured something in for tension. Attached are the pics I took this morning. It looks like there is a molded cap on the bottom of the base. Even a round molded cap in that. I just do not want to dig at it before asking you guys.

Thanks and have a good holiday.

That style might have a nut and a spring, but I doubt it
It's a manual mirror, right?
So, that means you can remove the mirror without completely removing the door panel to disconnect the mirror wires
You WILL need to remove the mirror to remove the fascia / trim pieces
I see new mirrors online for 42 bucks, in case there is no adjustment nut and spring under the trim piece
Ebay item number 231767507231

The cap enclosing the mirror stem will separate exposing a clamp of sorts holding it to the mirror base--you can see the parting lines in your photo. CAREFULLY warming it with a heat gun or old school hair blow dryer should render it flexible enough to be GENTLY pried away beginning at the spot where its fitting into the mirror base closest to the door shell. While certainly not that difficult generally having the cap warm enough to be flexible is the important part.

Once that cap is removed you see 6 Torx head screws acting as a clamp around the mirror stem but chances are they will be hard to loosen without stripping the heads. I use a bit of Kroil applied to the screw heads, a new Torx bit and a small impact gun pulsed on to persuade the screws to loosen.

Taking your time will give good results---I've done this several times and its works best by being patient!

Good luck!

On the money sir

Just as you spelled it out. I just so happened to walk over to the van today to see what I'd be up against. I saw the parting line and because the sun had been beating on it for a few hours, I sort of pushed on the cover a bit and it was beginning to come apart from the base. Attached is what I found. The cover inside clips had seen better days, but there were my little tightening bolts and clamp.

The metal that those Torxs screw into isn't the hardest metal, so I tighened all six slightly. It was just enough and all I needed. I knew the remaining two cover clips wouldn't hold so I closed it up with a bit of silicone all around. Looks great and holds adjustment.

Thank you JWA. H

Have a good Christmas sir.
