2002 Ranger Performance Chip Question
2002 Ranger Performance Chip Question
I am trying to find a way to dissable the factory speed restriction chip in my girlfriends ranger. I have read in the forum that I need to get another chip to override the factory chip. I have seen the diablo web site and I was wondering of anyone knew of any other sites that offer a chip that will dissable the factory chip but that wont cost me $200. I have seen some chips on ebay that say they will boost the horse power by doing something with the air temperature. Will one of those dissable the factory chip? I don't know much about car engines and what not, I can put in audio stuff and that about it. I am tired of the engine cutting out when I try to pass people on the highway. Can I just rip out the chip or bypass it some way? Someone please help me. Thanks!!!
The operating chip in your girlfriends ranger controls more then just the restriction. It controls shift points, fuel curve, etc. etc. So in order to change that you have to buy a chip that is better then what is in the truck. There isnt a way to dissable just one thing in a chip because its a computer chip not a module with a bunch of wires. So in order to get rid of the limiter you have to change the chip. $200 for a performance chip is pretty good. But either way you are going to have to replace the chip. The ones on e-bay are cheap and they claim to do the same as Diablo or other chips. I wouldnt trust it though, you pay $200-$300 for a reason and e-bay chips just sounds like a rip off to me.
If I remember correctly, the Ebay chips that screw with the air temp just fool the computer into thinking the incoming air is cooler than it really is. To compensate, the fuel mixture is run a little richer. Nothing else, not even the speed limiter, is changed.
That might give you a very, very small power increase... but for the most part will just kill your mileage and do nothing for your power.
If you get a chip, get the real thing. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for...
