Tailgate latch rod

Look up Hillman 11628. That is universal metal rod, you will have to cut it to length and bend the ends. Most hardware stores carry it. I guessed that 1/8 inch diameter would work, but they carry 3/16 also.

The rod is likely inside the tail gate. Sometimes they come loose and drop down. Might have to remove the gate and tip it upside down or use a mechanics mirror and a piece of wire with a hook to fish it up to the latch mechanism. Once back in the hole use the wire to keep it in place. A simple figure 8 tie will hold the rod in longer than a plastic clip.

I just bought the driver side rod for my 84 from LMC.
You need #5 part numbers 49-8462 (Left Hand / Driver Side) & 49-8463 (Right Hand / Passenger Side)
