Cam Sensor Failure

So, new to the 6.0 Forum, been so amazed at the wealth of available knowledge.

Had a crank/no start yesterday. Had a few minutes to look at the FORScan and watched a YouTube video recommended by I think @bismic in another post, so I think there’s other values than the below that I needed to look for.

Any threw a P2614 (cam circuit open?) and ultimately for times sake, took it to a local diesel shop recommended here at they’re replacing the CamSensor.

So my question is:

1. Does the cam sensor fail without warning?
2. Can someone point me in the right direction to get HPOP on my FORScan?

My numbers (I think) are posted below. Still learning how to read this stuff. Wondering also if there’s a better code reader setup, it seems a number of them that have been mentioned in the past are no longer available.

thanks!

It can def fail suddenly, or sporadically. Mine failed to get sync and start sporadically, then became more often it wouldn’t start. Chased my tail a bit before I pulled up cam sync on my DASHDAQ and figuring out what the issue was.

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with FORSCAN

Thanks. I'll look into DASHDAQ

DASHDAQ isn't as powerfull in troubleshooting as the full version of FORScan is (on a Windows laptop). It is however, a lot handier as a gauge system to watch while driving.

And yes, I have both.

Thanks! I was hoping you might chime in. Your posts have been really helpful, thanks!

Doesn't look like DASHDAQ is available anymore, do you have a recommendation for another unit with digital gauges to watch while driving?

I’d guess that’s an un-updated page, as the DASHDAQ XL is what I got back in, like, 2011 or so. And if I remember correctly the company that made it stopped supporting it around 2015 or 2016. I had contacted them to figure out how to add an exhaust gas temp sensor to my Excursion and they told me how and also gave me all the upgraded licenses for Ford since they weren’t selling them or upgrading them anymore

Yeah you must be right.

Zeitronix, who worked with crew Technologies for add-on sensors and such is still in business using a product call nDASH (looks a bit like DashDAQ).

Ahhh, yep, forgot about that…looks like that website hasn’t been updated since around 2015, either lol

As far as my “old man memory” can recollect it looks the same as back in the day

Interesting…that main page has way more stuff on it now. But the nDash page looks the same. I’d think they’d want to make it look more appealing, but that’s just my thoughts

Nice find

I wanted to update this thread because I had another crank/no start again after cam sensor replacement and it threw another cam sensor code.

This the circumstance and it is the order of what I did and it eventually started:

I drove about 45 minutes up the hill to Crestline, FORScan Lite was connected via Bluetooth OBDlink connector. No issues, no CEL, the drive was uneventful.

Bluetooth OBDlink dongle was still plugged in.
I was pointed nose downhill with the wheels turned toward the hill I parked next to.

I was parked for about an hour, came out, crank/no start. Checked codes, cam sensor open circuit (can’t remember the actual code) was there.

Because I was parked in a hard spot on a narrow road, I thought I would let the truck roll a little down the hill to a wide open level spot to give me the room to work if needed. So I moved the shifter to N with key in, and released the parking brake. But because the wheels were turned into the hill and with no power steering, truck wasn’t budging.

I then called the diesel shop that replaced the cam sensor and asked for some help to guide me to hopefully get the truck started. Tech advised that the pigtail may be bad, so if I can reach the cam sensor connect and remove and replace or even wiggle the wires, that may help. I reset the parking brake, confirmed vehicle in Park reach from underneath and wiggled cam sensor wires. Got back in the truck and started it up.

I immediately drove it to the shop, and the techs spent two days going through it. Nothing was wrong. Wires not wrong, wiring harness not wrong, they cold soaked it heat soaked it (I think those are the right terms) voltages, pressures, FICM, everything perfect. The only thing they could think of is that Bluetooth OBDLINK adapter causing the PCM to freak out and that is what caused the crank/no start.

thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions.

I drove the Ex from California to Wyoming yesterday and from Cody to Billings today, with zero hiccups.

thanks!

I suppose! Glad I haven’t had another issue, I wonder if I’ll have the same issue with an Edge CTS? Domestic Diesel said they see the issue with many OBD connectors with the exception on edge and scan gauge. Any one have a comment on this? I’ve got a CTS3 coming on Monday.
